The 1987 Chambertin Grand Cru, an ex-domaine bottle, was a little dilute on the nose even compared to the 1984, with touches of cigar smoke infusing the black fruit, just a hint of bergamot. It is missing a bit of cohesion. The palate is framed by firm tannins, lightly spiced with sour cherry towards the finish that uncharacteristically attenuates and leaves you wanting a bit more. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne.

I thought the Chambertin had more of a sweet, vanilla oakiness than the explosively ripe fruity Clos de Beze. The Chambertin tastes more tannic and exhibits excellent depth, ripeness, and a long finish. I would expect it to be at its best between 1992-2000.
