Score 86/100 · Drink 2016-2021, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Mar 2016

Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical, the 2003 Chambertin Grand Cru had a predictably opulent, heady nose that seemed indifferent to expressing Pinot Noir. There is a plenty of crème de cassis here, turning more towards menthol with time. The palate has a sweet entry, rounded in texture, smudged with low acidity and a monotone finish. The shortcomings of this wines are all too apparent when contrasted with far superior vintages. Tasted January 2016.

Good full red. Raspberry, strawberry, iron, minerals and spicy oak, along with an exotic whiff of orange peel. Then concentrated and rather suave; exotic in style but still fresh for 2003 and not at all cooked. Finishes very long and ripely tannic but turned a bit drier with aeration. Ultimately less refined than the very promising 2004.

Bright, deep red. Enticing, nuanced aromas of black raspberry, mocha, game, iron and animal fur. Suave and silky, with nicely integrated acidity framing the sappy red fruit and torrefaction flavors. This shows lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and lingering red fruits. But does it have the classic thrust of great Chambertin?
