The 1990 Coutet is slightly deeper in color than the 1989. Tropical fruit, pineapple, passion fruit and mango mingle with beeswax aromas, though the 1989 has a little more delineation. The palate is well balanced with a waxy texture, tangerine and marmalade notes with a slightly peppery finish. Although again, by direct comparison, the 1989 has more composure and length. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate.

The 1990 Coutet is pale amber in color with lovely roasted nuts, crème caramel and preserved mandarin peel notes with hints of burnt toast, sandalwood, and lemon tart. The palate seems relatively dry and savory, with wonderful freshness and loads of spices coming though on the long finish.

A pretty Sauternes, with apple, honey and lemon peel aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, lightly sweet, with a long, fresh finish. Bit light for the vintage.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 4,500 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2000.
