The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico shows some of the difficulty of the vintage with dried wood, prune, old leather and cola. There’s a dusty note of driftwood or forest floor. Silky tannins add some finesse to the close. Drink 2013-2018. Importer: Bonhomie Wine Imports, www.bonhomiewine.com

Mid ruby with a soft rim. Not particularly expressive but there's spice and cherry and herbs and a touch of sweet leather. Dried fruit too. Rich and full but with surprising freshness on the finish. Tangy sour aftertaste counterbalances the warmth and richness. (JH)
