The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Estournelles St-Jacques has a rather rustic, mushroom-like, soy-tinged bouquet that feels fully mature, although it does convey presence. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, pretty and slightly tart red fruit with a short, rather economical finish that leaves you wanting more. Not bad, but probably its best days are behind it. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-Saint-Jacques offers up a pretty, full-mature nose of currant, dried cherry, forest floor and conifer—and even notions of rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and structured around polished tannins and cool acids, with a nice sense of completeness and moderate depth at the core, though the finish is a bit brief and austere.
Deeper ruby than most. Lots of evolution at the rim – and on the nose. Sweet palate entry and then acidity rather takes over. I’d like just a little more stuffing. The tannins remain dominant. Clean and vibrant but just a little too light on fruit. (JR)
