Score 92/100 · Drink 2009-2024, Robert Parker, Apr 2009

The flamboyantly intense 2006 Cornas La Sabarotte boasts an ostentatious nose of blackberries, espresso roast, licorice, pepper, fig, and forest floor. This powerful, dense, full-bodied, opulent 2006 is already revealing considerable sensuality and appeal. It should drink beautifully for 15+ years. Domaine Courbis appears to have an enlightened winemaking style, using some small oak casks and picking ripe fruit, but never losing the typicity one expects of these wines. Brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis are avid believers in terroir, and the top cuvees are named after their respective vineyards. There are three vineyard designated wines from Cornas, all from well-known lieux-dits, that are more similar than dissimilar. The 2007s are lighter than the richer 2006s. 2006 is a strong vintage in Cornas, and Domaine Courbis has produced three excellent wines. Importer: Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel. Deep ruby. Impressively complex bouquet of dark berries, kirsch, violet and smoky Asian spices. Brighter red berries on the palate, with spicecake and molasses nuances adding complexity. Gains weight and power with air, finishing with impressive clarity and thrust. Even with extended aeration I didn't detect the tannins that I'd expect from a young wine raised in 100% new barriques

Inky ruby. Seductive, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry-cola aromas are enlivened by smoky minerals and fresh violet. Deep, creamy and sweet, offering palate-staining blackberry and boysenberry flavors, along with floral pastilles and mocha. The tannins seem almost invisible.
