Tasting notes
The 1983 Haut-Bages-Libéral is a tad rustic on the nose, a bit tight at first, austere and missing the bandwidth of the 1983 Durfort-Vivens tasted in tandem. There is a touch of dryness on the palate, faded and Graves-like, cohering a little towards the conservative finish. Given that this bottle is perfect in terms of provenance, I would consume bottles in the near future. Tasted at the château.

The 1983 is a big, brash, aggressive sort of wine, with intense color, a full-blown bouquet of ripe black currants, deep, full, thick, fruity flavors, and a long, moderately tannic finish. This brawny wine has, like many 1983s, matured more quickly than expected. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/89.
