Ruby-red. Peppery redcurrant and cherry aromas display impressive cut, with musky black tea and dark chocolate notes adding depth. Youthfully taut red and dark berry flavors are deepened by mocha and licorice, with fine-grained tannins adding gentle support. The long, juicy finish shows a restrained sweetness and hints of pungent herbs.

Score 88/100 · Drink 2006-2016, Robert Parker, Oct 2006

Slightly disappointing compared to some of its siblings, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 is a multi-regional blend of 100% Cabernet that spent time in both new and old French oak. While very good, it did not sing as loudly as some of Penfolds’ other efforts. It reveals notes of spice, dried herbs, cedar, damp earth, black cherries, and currants. Medium-bodied with a lovely attack and mid-palate, but jagged tannin in the finish, it should drink well for 5-10 years. Importer: Southcorp, PWG Vintners, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 258-8755
