From 30 to 40 year-old vines that yield no more than 2 tons/acre, fermented in old American oak hogsheads. Low-key, rather subtle nose and fine tannins. Carries its 14 per cent alcohol well. The wine, or perhaps vintage in this case, seems quite admirably ‘cool’ and well balanced. (JR)

Saturated ruby. Explosive, ripe aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, roasted coffee, fruitcake and cigarbox. Fat, even unctuous, displaying blueberry pie, sweet licorice, kirsch, molasses and subtle oak spices. The tannins are big but covered by fruit on the finish. As big and dense as this is, it's also focused and balanced.(Epicurean Wines,Seattle WA

The stunning 2002 Bishop (100% Shiraz from 40- to 80-year-old vines) was aged 16 months in primarily old American hogsheads (300-500 liter barrels). This is a superb example of Barossa Shiraz, combining power and concentration with a sense of balance and symmetry. Dense purple-colored with a gorgeous nose of sweet cassis intertwined with new saddle leather, spice box, and licorice, this full-bodied, unctuously-textured effort boasts tremendous intensity, good tannic structure, decent acidity, and a long, heady finish. The 14% alcohol content is relatively restrained by Barossa standards. It should drink well for 7-8 years. Importer: Benjamin Hammerschlag, Epicurean Wines, Seattle, WA; tel. (206) 923-1376
