Dark ruby/purple-tinged with notes of violets, black currants, cherries, and hints of truffles as well as incense, this stylish, medium-bodied 2004 possesses lovely fruit, good acidity, and sweet tannin. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

Full ruby-red. Cool aromas of dark fruits, musky espresso and game. Juicy on entry, then silky-sweet and nicely concentrated in the middle, with pure black fruit flavors framed and lifted by bright acids. I like the combination of creamy sweetness and brisk acidity. Perhaps not as concentrated as the 2006 but has more early sex appeal.

Good medium ruby. Blackcurrant, blackberry, mocha, espresso, bitter chocolate and sexy oak scents on the nose. At once smooth and high-pitched, with concentrated flavors of dark berries, espresso, chocolate and game nicely shaped by racy acidity. Finishes with chewy, firm tannins and very good length. Back in the day, this wine was dirt-cheap, but it still offers very good value.

The ‘baby Ausone’ is not nearly as intense as its progenitor, especially on the nose, but it has a lovely palate and texture – even if the nose is lightly floral and slightly pinched. Neat, vigorous fresh fruit. Sappy if a bit dry on the finish. (JR)
