Score 92.5/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

(includes 93% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc, 3% merlot and 1% petit verdot) Good deep medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, minerals and spice cake; showing more lift today than the 2001 cabernet. Sweet but firm flavors of blackberry, cassis, tar, minerals and menthol. Quite youthfully backward, with more depth than the cabernet sauvignon bottling. The supple, fine tannins reach the teeth. The higher percentage of new oak (85%, vs. 50% for the cabernet) dusts the finish with exotic spices. "The 2001 cabernet really jumps out of the glass today," notes Thomas, "but the tannins of this estate blend are ultimately finer."

(cabernet sauvignon with bits of malbec, cabernet franc and petit verdot) Saturated ruby. Aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, soy sauce and menthol, with a whiff of celery seed. Very primary, somewhat clenched flavors of black cherry and menthol. A somewhat medicinal, uncompromising red, with strong notes of minerals and graphite. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. Thomas expressed confidence that this youthfully muscular wine will eventually surpass the more pliant 2000.
