Score 93/100 · Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy, Nov 2016

This bottle travelled with Eric from Burgundy. Beautiful vibrant ruby colour, explosive peony fruit, more character than the bruised peaches often typical of the vintage. Succulent, rounded gorgeous. This does not sit in the classic line, showing maybe some heat at the end, but not enough to take away the pleasure.

Loads of spices are intermingled with blackberries and black cherries in the wonderful aromatics of the 2003 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. A bold, ample, medium to full-bodied wine, it expands on the palate, revealing great breadth and richness. Hugely spicy, this candied blackberry-dominated effort sports a persistent finish crammed with solid tannin.

Good deep bright red. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, coffee, mocha and sexy oak. Then less exotic than usual for this wine at this early stage of its evolution: saline and savory, with notes of underbrush but not the normal India n spices. Perhaps a bit youthfully tight today. Quite restrained in its sweetness and not yet showing much complexity. Finishes with big, broad tannins and very good length.

This is more of everything here including aromatic complexity, size, weight, muscle and sheer depth. The aromas here are truly remarkable with raspberry and ripe black berry notes complemented by spicy plum and a smoky perfume that is akin to musk. The rich, intense and full-bodied flavors are relatively supple yet wrapped in dense but fine tannins buffered by superb mid-palate sap. This is hugely long with a powerful and quite chewy finish. This should age for 25 to 30 years, perhaps longer as the balance is spot on.
