Deep red. Crystallized berries and exotic notes of gingerbread and toffee on the liqueur-like nose. Superconcentrated, rich and sappy, with a sweetness of fruit rare for the vintage. A very rich, layered fruit bomb of a Clos de Beze, with a substantial spicy oak component and a faintly roasted note. Very impressive, but far less reserved than most 2001 examples from this vineyard.

(two barrels produced from 100-year-old vines) Ruby-red. Knockout nose combines crystallized raspberry, game, mocha and gunflint; not overly oaky despite the fact that Laurent used 200% new oak. Creamy and voluptuous, already exuding wonderfully complex inner-mouth perfume. Offers nearly confectionery ripeness and sweetness of fruit. Finishes extremely long, with the tannins buried under fruit. (Laurent also has a small quantity of Bonnes-Mares from the Chambolle side of the appellation but planned to keep this explosively smoky, minerally cuvee for himself.)
