Good bright, full medium red. Subdued, youthfully medicinal aromas of black cherry, cranberry, licorice and menthol. Then surprisingly sweet in the mouth, but with pepper, spice and mineral notes contributing to the overall impression of structure. At once pliant and firm, finishing with lingering berry, mineral and spice flavors and rich, chocolatey tannins. This savory, intense Rugiens may well merit a higher score several years down the road. From barrel a year ago, I marginally preferred the Pezerolles, but today this Rugiens shows better balance and more even ripeness.

(from vines replanted in 1985) Dark red. Musky aromas of iron and Tellicherry pepper lifted by a stony quality; less complex than the Pezerolles. Supple but juicy, with good acidity and notes of pepper and spices to give definition to the middle palate. Perhaps more classical than the Pezerolles, but also less spherical, and tighter. These younger vines produced a higher crop level than the 50-year-old vines in Pezerolles.
