The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva is a gorgeous expression that shows the beauty and grace of carefully aged Sangiovese. I described the wine as a “smooth talker” in my notes thanks to its seamless dialogue of sweet cherry, vanilla, toasted oak, licorice and anisette. Silky sensations also come through on the palate. Decant three hours or more. Drink: 2014-2028.

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is a dramatic, large-scaled wine. With time in the glass, the layers of flavor fill out beautifully. Dark cherries, cedar, licorice and tobacco are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge as the wine opens up. Firm tannins frame the powerful, vibrant finish. The 1999 is best cellared for another few years, but if opened today it needs at least a few hours of air.

Showing livelier color than the 1998, the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento opens with delicate, nuanced aromatics followed by a lovely core of red cherries, tobacco and minerals. It offers outstanding length as well as purity in a more linear, structured style than the brawnier 1998, although my impression is that the 1999 will prove to be the more complex as well as age-worthy wine. Anticipated maturity
