Very deep aromas of smoke, clove, iodine and smoky oak. Extremely backward and young; brooding and quite oaky today. This seems almost too large for the mouth-an impression I've gotten more often from Le Montrachet than from any other wine. A wine of outstanding breadth, but still an infant. The malolactic fermentation occurred at a snail's pace; in fact, the wine was racked before the malo and about 30% of the secondary fermentation was ultimately blocked.

Extremely heavy so not much nose though with the odd citrus top note discernible. Still too low key to show its real potential but this seems slightly stodgy next to the other Grand Cru whites. (JR)
The 2002 Montrachet was re-tasted in early February, 2004 immediately after bottling. It reveals a highly expressive nose of sap-laden rocks, spices, and ginger. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured effort is seamless, rich, broad, and ample. Loads of spices, hazelnuts, cloves, pears, and honeyed minerals can be discerned in its complex, harmonious character. Its pure, lush personality and impressively bold flavors linger throughout its long, suave finish. Given that this wine had recently been subjected to filtration and the shock of being bottled, I have every confidence in the world that it will gain even more power, flesh, and length over the next 2-3 years.
