The 2005 Barolo Bricco Rocche has now entered its plateau of maturity. How long it stays there remains to be seen, but I would prefer to drink the 2005 sooner rather than later. Sweet, round and inviting, the Bricco Rocche offers all of the sensuality that is so typical of this site, along with an extra kick of spiciness from the 100% new French oak. Sweet tobacco, dark cherry, smoke and savory herbs build into the powerful, distinctly virile finish.

Castiglione Falletto. A nose pretty much marked by vanilla, cherry and malty notes. Pretty obvious modernist approach, perhaps even a little too much, but it surely is seductive. Still youthful sweet fruit that is well balanced and juicy. Really tannic finish with persistent mouth-filling fruit. Muscular and what you probably call ‘sexy’. (WS)

Good full red. Captivating aromas of redcurrant, plum, menthol, brown spices, truffle, tobacco, earth and nutty oak. Big, broad, ripe and sweet; this boasts a lovely lush middle and impressive fullness for the vintage. Finishes quite long, with broad, serious, building tannins and noteworthy sweetness.

The estate's 2005 Barolo Bricco Rocche reveals terrific richness and density in a full-bodied seamless style. Ripe red fruits, flowers, spices and French oak all come together in an explosive, heady Barolo. Clean mineral notes frame the long, refined finish. This too needs time to settle down, but it is shaping up to be a gorgeous wine in this vintage. I have never understood the premium this wine commands vis-à-vis the estate's other Barolos, but it is undoubtedly a very fine wine.
