From the 'Golden Mile' – eastern side Waipara Valley. Barrel fermented, bâtonnage and two years in barrel. Bright light gold. Woody/cedary nose. Slight grip on the finish. Good acidity. A bit like Encruzado from Portugal! (JH)

The 2009 Chardonnay has an intensely tropical, slightly evolved nose of dried mango, pink guava and pineapple paste with plenty of toasty oak and a touch of butterscotch. Full-bodied, it has a rich, concentrated texture framed by a high-acid backbone. It finishes long, with oak flavors standing out, and a little warmth. Drink it now to 2015.
