Score 90/100 · Drink 2001-2009, Pierre Rovani, Apr 2000

The 1998 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes displays aromas of toasted hazelnuts, minerals, and crisp, ripe apples. This broad, deep, powerful wine is packed with lemons, pears, and gravel-like flavors. Medium-bodied, intense, and admirably long, this well-defined, flavorful wine should have the potential to withstand the test of time. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2009+. Importer: Seagram Chateau & Estate Wines Company, New York, NY; tel (212) 572-7725.

Aromas of lime, mint, coconut and bacon fat. Dense but extremely unforthcoming; intensely flavored but a bit unfocused today, with some heat showing. Fairly long on the aftertaste, but without quite the flavor interest today of the Caillerets or Vergers. Marginally disappointing considering that this is normally Ramonet's top premier cru, but this may simply be in an awkward stage.
