100% Sangiovese from the east-facing Scanni vineyard propagated from a massal selection of the Il Poggio cru, and produced for the first time in 1974. Deep ruby with the beginning of orange on the rim. Beautiful nose, pulls you right in with mature cherry, raspberry, tobacco leaf and hints of new oak. Well seasoned. Fantastic play between grainy bitter tannin and acidity. Make that a lot of tannin, but there is plenty of fruit to wrap it up. Food! (WS)

The 2006 Sangiovese Fabrizio Bianchi jumps from the glass with an exciting mélange of red berries, French oak, spices and flowers. The Sangiovese is a decidedly plump wine for a house best known for a firm style of Chianti, while the overt oakiness will come as a shock to readers weaned on the estate's better-known wines. This remains a pretty, nicely balanced red well suited to near-term drinking.
