(14% alcohol) Bright, full red. Minerally aromas of cherry, smoke, game and menthol. Fat and ripe but youthfully backward and showing less obvious sweetness than the Chevrets. But this structured, juicy wine shows excellent mineral lift and carries its substantial alcohol gracefully. Finishes long and firm, with nicely buffered tannins.

Armed with outstanding depth and purity of fruit, the red cherry-scented 2002 Volnay Fremiets coats the taster’s palate with sweet blueberries and black cherries. Light to medium-bodied, its satiny character is loaded with fruit that lingers throughout its long, lush finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2012. This too is exuberant, indeed even explosive on the nose with much more of a new world style than any of the prior wines. Still, there is excellent depth, density and fine complexity, especially on the long and persistent finish. Very stylish and utterly delicious and while it may not appeal to those who prefer classic Volnay, this is very well executed in its particular fashion.

(60% new oak) Deep, low-pitched aromas of black cherry, mocha, coffee, roasted game and smoke. Sweet and smooth but with lovely vinosity. Still, this is a bit of an introvert today. Superripe, even slightly roasted, and relying more on its youthfully aggressive tannins than on its acidity for structure. Very long and reticent on the back end.
