Tasting notes
Vintage Magnum. 55% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Blanc, 20% Pinot Noir. How very handsome this brilliant wine looks in magnum. This, the top bottling from this fine producer, manages to be both rich and delicate. There's a certain softness but also real zestiness and refreshment. Stevenson reminded us that Maurizio Zanella and team are so fastidious that they wash the grapes three times. All the wine for this blend is fermented in barrique but there is no trace of oakiness whatsoever. Just sheer class. Beautiful small bead. These magnums were disgorged in 2013. (JR)

A masterpiece rendition from a warmer vintage, the 2005 Franciacorta Cuvee Annamaria Clementi Riserva is a carefully contemplated blend of 55% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Bianco and 20% Pinot Nero. Only made in the best vintages, it is the estate’s flagship wine. This beautiful sparkler puts forth a complex bouquet of sourdough, exotic spice, crushed white flowers, candied lemon and Golden Delicious apple. I just love this sparkler. What sets this wine apart is its enormous length. Sensations of fleshy fruit and acidic freshness last many long minutes. This bottle was disgorged in the summer of 2013. Drink: 2014-2019. Every region has its shining star – that single estate that symbolically encapsulates the prestige and potential of an entire region. Ca’ del Bosco is to Franciacorta what Biondi Santi is to Montalcino or what Giacomo Conterno is to Barolo. With a statement of that magnitude comes enormous responsibility – something Maurizio Zanella has understood flawlessly. He wears two hats: one as president of Ca’ del Bosco and one as president of the Franciacorta Consorzio charged with the region’s promotional efforts. He has been fantastically effective from all points. If Franciacorta is finally entering a new level of notoriety, much of the credit goes to Zanella. Aromas of soft cheese, bread dough, apple pie and lemon rind. Full body, with a vibrant backbone of acidity and bright fruit. Firm and very tight. A solid and structured sparkling wine. Complex and layered. Drink or hold. Nov 2014, www.jamessuckling.com
