Score 91/100 · Drink 2002-2010, Robert Parker, Oct 2002
Melton's homage to Chateauneuf du Pape, the superb 1999 Nine Popes (a blend of 54% Grenache, 44% Shiraz, and the rest Mourvedre), boasts a big, peppery, spicy perfume revealing scents of new saddle leather, blackberries, and cherries. Dense, full-bodied, and loaded, with no hard edges, but more structure than the Grenache, it will drink beautifully for 7-8 years. Importer: Ted Schrauth, Old Vines Australia, imported by Epic Wines, Santa Cruz, CA, tel. (831) 689-9080; Commonwealth Wines, Mansfield, MA, tel. (508) 261-9300; and Domaine Select, New York, NY, tel. (212) 279-0799
