2008 Latour a Pomerol

The 2008 Latour-à-Pomerol put in an odd showing compared to a fabulous couple of showing, admittedly several years ago. This has an open-knit bouquet with red berry fruit, cedar and mint, quite generous with orange rind scents emerging with aeration. After a few minutes it seems to disintegrate a little, just a touch of oxidation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It feels quite dense in the mouth but not overbearing, gently gripping the mouth but at the finish I find a nagging green note that I had not noticed before. Fingers crossed another bottle shows better. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.

Tasted blind. A bit stinky on the nose. Simple and just sweet red wine with a bit of alcohol on the end. (JR)

Bright, dark red. Complex, distinctive nose melds redcurrant, iron, black olive, mocha and dried flowers. A nicely delineated juicy midweight with ripe acids giving shape and grip to the redcurrant and red cherry fruit. Finishes with firm tannins, an element of fresh herbs and good structure. Will this moderately ripe wine expand in bottle?
