Score 87/100 · Drink 2003-2012, Robert Parker, Jan 2003

A very pleasant, medium-bodied, fleshy Pomerol. A fully mature nose of smoke, roasted vegetables, dried herbs, sweet currants, and caramel, medium to full body on the attack, but some drying even desiccating tannins in the finish make for a very good but somewhat uninspiring effort from Latour a Pomerol. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted, 1/02.

A traditional wine of autumnal aromas of leaves, game and fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a big, chewy finish. Needs time.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 1999

The 1989 Latour-à-Pomerol, directly from the cellars of Jean-Pierre Moueix, shows more bricking than the 1990 tasted alongside. The bouquet seems to express a little more Cabernet Franc. It's less showy than the ensuing vintage, with loamy aromas coming through with a touch of licorice. Like many 1989s, this gains complexity with aeration. The palate has good substance with impressive fruit concentration, notes of blackberry, licorice and spice toward the finish, where there is a trace of star anise. This is a wonderful showing for the 1989 though a hint of dryness suggests that it might not be one of the long haul. Tasted at the Latour à Pomerol dinner at Taillevent in London.
