Tasting notes
Ruby-red. Old-school Rioja aromas of dried red fruits, rose oil, vanilla, tobacco and cedar, with a spicy overtone. Broad and supple in texture, offering sweet cherry-vanilla and floral pastille flavors and notes of vanilla bean, mocha and anise. Dusty, fine-grained tannins add shape and grip to the very long smoke- and vanilla-accented finish. I suspect that this wine will be drinking well a long time from now but it's delicious right now, especially with some decanting.

The 2001 Gran Reserva is a glass-coating opaque purple color. It presents an aromatic array of incense, Asian spices, cigar box, violets, and an assortment of black fruits. Dense, sweet, and powerful, this loaded effort from a great vintage will continue to evolve for another 8-10 years and deliver prime drinking through 2036. Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja’s legendary estates. Here tradition and quality go hand in hand despite the Bodega’s enormous production and a few minor tweaks to update the style. It was my privilege in May 2010 to participate in a vertical tasting of Marques de Riscal Gran Reservas dating back to 1870 at the Bodega. The corks from the ancient vintages were removed with Port tongs to prevent any contamination of the wine. Shaw-Smith Importers, FL
Not yet released. 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Cabernet, all from vines aged 30+ years, aged in US oak for 28 months (no new oak). Then three years in bottle before release. (The new barrels are used on wine they are not going to bottle and sell under their own name.) Deep crimson – less bricky than the riserva. Black fruit. Subtle and spicy. Cool flavour. Firm and savoury. Dense. Still so young. Perfume to come. Very very fine but pretty firm. Long and elegant. Not ready. (JH)
