Tasting notes
The 1996 Barolo Marenca is profound, with a dark ruby color, and a sumptuous nose of jammy plum liqueur and black cherries. It is a sensual, full-bodied wine with an opulent texture, fabulous extract, and an explosive, 50-second finish. It coats the palate, is unbelievably rich in fruit, glycerin, and extract, and should prove to be a modern-day classic. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Good medium red-ruby. Subdued nose hints at sappy cherry, mocha, leather and earth. Chewy, concentrated and fat in the middle palate, but could use a bit more precision and verve. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.
