Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2003 Haut Batailley has a pleasant nose of black fruit and warm gravel, just a hint of licorice in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple, gamey entry. There is an animally aspect to this mature Haut-Batailley which is approachable and charming. It does reflect the vintage more than the terroir but it is still perfectly enjoyable with a lovely savory finish. Drink now and over several years. Tasted July 2016.

Mid garnet. Both cedary and sweet dark fruit on the nose. Verging on prunes, plus liqourice. Surprisingly leafy on the palate. Juicy and lithe – more so than I expected from the nose – though the tannins are still quite firm. Perhaps a bit hard at the end. (JH)

Bright crimson with some development. Racy, spiky. Very chewy and chunky. Does not exactly soar. Very chunky! But at least it’s not thin like the disappointing Pessac-Léognans. (Average group score: 15.8) (JR)
