Tasting notes
The 2009 Meandro Do Vale Meao is 35% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 25% Tinta Roriz and 5% each of Sousao and Tinta Barroca. Rather burly, powerful and hard edged this year, this Meandro shows a lot of everything. In keeping this open for awhile, I noted first how steely and hard it became and then finally saw some signs of it expanding and improving. This is a big Meandro – not that we haven’t seen big ones before – but it did come around pretty well with some time and effort. It is a lot of wine for this price range. Give it a couple of years to settle down. It has upside potential it is not showing at the moment, but it should be a great value . Drink 2014-2023. Importer: W.J. Deutsch & Sons, Harrison, NY; tel. Mainly Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. On the right bank of the Douro, next to Gaivosa. Oak in evidence on the nose, sweet and spicy. Powerful and velvety. Tannins are so plush but there's a marked mineral layer which pulls back the sometimes overly intense Touriga character to a fine balance. Touch of dark chocolate on the palate but mostly it is fluid, clear fruit and a spiced aftertaste. Refined and elegant even though it is powerful. Still has a touch of that Touriga bergamot and floral perfume but refined and retstrained. (JH)
