The 100% Marsanne 2004 M. Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette sports a vivid yellow color as well as a slightly exotic bouquet of quince and subtle citrus fruit that’s supported by anise, musk, minerals and almond. The wine shows hints of oak but overall, it’s very rich with solid complexity and depth. The wine is medium bodied on the palate and showcases rich, beautifully textured fruit, fresh acids and long, persistent finish. Superb.

Perhaps the best cuvee he has ever made of Ermitage Chante Alouette is the 2004, a fabulous vintage for the whites of the northern Rhone. This wine competes attractively with the single vineyard whites. The wine has wonderful notes of honeysuckle, licorice, quince, and white currants in an almost thick, juicy style yet buttressed by considerable acidity. Bright gold. Ripe, honeyed peach and pear on the nose, with a salty mineral undertone. Round and sweet, with powerful, leesy peach and apricot flavors and a juicy quality to the finish. This is drinking well now.
Pale gold. Waxy lanolin notes and honeyed nuts on the nose; reminded me of a Loire Valley chenin blanc. The nutty quality carries onto the palate, which features dried apple and pear fruit. Quite thick, even oily in texture, with a persistent finish.
