Score 87-88/100 · Drink 2001-2017, Robert Parker, Apr 2001
The deep purple-colored 1999 is an impressive effort from Franc-Mayne. It possesses sweet tannin, and a luscious, concentrated, multilayered mid-palate, abundant quantities of black fruits intermixed with smoke, licorice, and earth. Dense, opulent, and full-bodied, with admirable sweetness, it will be delicious upon release, and last for 15-16 years.

Bright deep ruby. Cassis, blackberry, violet and spice on the nose. Shows decent texture but comes across as stubbornly grapey and primary, with a note of shoe polish. Finishes with tongue-clenching tannins. Seems rather heavily extracted.
