Medium red. Spicy bitter cherry, smoked meat and licorice on the nose. Sweet, juicy and suave, with nicely integrated acidity. Finishes sappy and long, with firm but smooth tannins. Quite open at the moment, but probably will be best in about five years. (I should note that a second bottle, tasted subsequently in New York, was of roughly equal quality but showed a distinctly cool, medicinal aspect and finished with tighter tannins.)

The medium to dark ruby-colored 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle bursts with cherry and violet aromas. Mouth-coating, sensual, and soft, it delivers oodles of black cherry paste, vanilla, and raspberries in its fruit-forward, medium-bodied character. It should be drunk over the next 6-7 years. (this and the subsequent cuvees were still in barrels) Good dark red. Nose dominated by game and nutty oak. Supple and broad but quite oaky, even a bit hard-edged. The wineÂ’s tannins reach the front teeth.
