Score 87-90/100 · Drink 2002-2009, Pierre Rovani, Jun 1997

The opaque Gevrey-Chambertin La Petite Chapelle displays an appealingly sweet nose of red and black cherries and tangy currants on the nose. It has beautifully supple, velvety-textured, medium-to-full-bodied personality packed with blueberries and raspberries. This potentially outstanding wine has gorgeously ripe, round tannins that will allow it to age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2009. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided. A Patrick Lesec Selection (Paris Fax: 011-33-1-42-84-38-22), and in Massachusetts: Classic Wine Imports, Boston, MA; tel (617) 731-6644.

Very good dark red. Complex, perfumed, soil-inflected aromas of black plum, cherry and smoke; slightly roasted quality. Sweet, fleshy and mouthfilling, but with solid framing acidity. Tannins enrobed by fruit. A hint of resiny oak on the finish. This has turned out well.
