Score 89/100 · Drink 2022-2034, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jun 2022

Like many of the 2005 Pomerols at the 17 year stage, the colour is still deep ruby, and the aromatics are open, welcoming and ready to drive into. The character of the wine is dominated by tertiary flavours of earth, undergrowth, blackberry, rust, with touches of brett. Old school, charming, mouthwatering on the finish. Jean-Marie Bouldy owner, already farming organically at this stage, although not certified until 2009.

The 2005 Bellegrave is a light-weight, easy-going Pomerol to drink now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red raspberry and dried herbs are nicely lifted. The 2005 has aged nicely, but it is decidedly light in body.

Less impressive from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2005 Bellegrave reveals a deep ruby color along with sweet aromas of black cherries, mocha, dried herbs, and a touch of earth. Medium-bodied and fruit-forward, with good acidity, smooth tannin, and an easy-going personality, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 10-12 years.

Medium ruby-red. Musky black cherry and violet aromas. Easygoing and moderately sweet, with black cherry, dark berry and menthol flavors showing limited complexity. Finishes with sweet tannins. Supple and nicely balanced; perhaps time in barrel will bring more personality to this chunky wine.
