The 2000 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru emphasizes its superiority over Les Champans now the wines have reached adulthood. The mineral element is more accentuated on the nose, there is slightly more purity and conviction. The terroir feels tangible here. The palate is fresh and vibrant and demonstrates convincing density and grip. It offers darker fruit than the Champans, laced with a charcoal note on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune.

Aromatically demure, the black cherry-scented 2000 Volnay Taillepieds has a magnificent personality. Broad, sexy, expressive, and deep, it coats the taster's palate with loads of plump, sensual red cherries and blackberries. It has a satin-textured, gorgeous mouth-feel, a flamboyant personality, and lovely breadth as well as length. It lacks the complexity of the Marquis d'Angerville's finest wines yet delivers tons of supple fruit. Drink it over the next 6 years. Cask sample. Very, very deep crimson. Savoury, chewy with a suggestion of cherries. Very hard work at the moment. Grainy tannins. (JR)
