The 1993 Tokaji Blue Label 5-Puttonyos is a little muffled on the resinous, waxy nose; hints of brown sugar and dried honey surface with time, but it never achieves the delineation of other bottles from the same era. The palate is much better, featuring sharp, bitter lemon interwoven into the orange and marmalade notes. It gently fans out toward the nutty, oxidative finish. I just find the sharpness a little too much here. Tasted at the Royal Tokaji Company tasting in London.

RS 177 g/l, TA 10.85 g/l. Smooth, thick and glossy with less well defined fruit than the single-vineyard wines, but the same bewitching balance of sugar and acid. Mushroom and damp earth from the botrytis. Probably has the stamina to age for years, although I wouldn’t want the fruit to recede any further. (RH)
