Drouhin's 2001 Musigny Grand Cru is beginning to drink very well, opening in the glass to reveal an alluring bouquet of black cherry, raspberry, rose petal, violets, summer truffle and subtle espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, succulent and generous, its chassis of fine tannins enrobed in an ample core of juicy fruit. Anyone sitting on bottles in the cellar should feel very content indeed.

Medium red; browning slightly at the rim but bright. Knockout nose combines plum, red licorice, truffle, mocha, minerals and spices, with complicating balsamic nuances. Wonderfully plummy, creamy, seamless wine with superb depth and breadth of flavor. Not hugely complex but boasts outstanding finesse of texture, not to mention harmonious acidity and fine-grained tannins. Plush but not a bit thick or sloppy. This would be perfect alongside mushrooms or truffle, or a filet of deer. The dusty tannins perk up the taste buds on the back end.

Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest and most famous producers in Burgundy, making both domaine and négociant wines. It remains family-owned and run, now in the hands of the fourth generation.
