The proprietary blend of 70% Grenache (80-year old vines), 25% Shiraz, and 5% Mourvedre, the 1999 The Ironstone Pressings was produced from yields of .5 tons per acre. It is a fabulously serious, concentrated effort with a dense ruby/purple color, great intensity, and a sweet perfume of black cherry liqueur intermixed with blackberry, kirsch, and pepper characteristics. Opulent and seamless, with layers of flavor, this classic effort can be drunk now and over the next 18 years. Importer: Rob McDonald, Old Bridge Cellars, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 258-9552

The 1999 Ironstone Pressings from d’Arenberg is a timely reminder of how well these Aussie wines have aged. This GSM exudes vigour and purity on the nose, showing black plum mixed with subtle cough candy and lavender. It is very controlled with ample refinement, perhaps “contained” by the passing 26 years. The palate remains fresh and vital, very well balanced with saturated, smooth tannins, polished and graceful towards the finish. A gem hiding in plain sight!
