(made mainly from McLaren Vale with some Padthaway grapes) – Very healthy crimson with some youthful blue notes; this was definitely one of the less evolved wines. It shared the initial minty characteristic of the Hill of Grace. Concentrated and very, very Australian. A little like the Balmoral in style but much fresher fruit. I described it as a 'big, bold Barossa stonker – and why not?' All in balance except for very slightly dry tannins on the finish. (JR)

The outstanding 1996 Shiraz Eileen Hardy reveals a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of American oak, blackberry jam, tar, and spice. Opulent and viscous, with a full-bodied, layered palate, this cleanly made, chewy, rich Shiraz should be drunk over the next 5-10 years. Importer: International Cellars, Chantilly, VA; tel.
