Good full, bright red. Profound musky aromas of dark raspberry, licorice, crushed stone and Benedictine. Densely packed, sappy and savory, with outstanding class and inner-mouth perfume to the flavors of red fruits, medicinal herbs, minerals and soil. Boasts the complexity and texture of a grand cru and finishes with remarkable building length and subtlety. The very suave tannins melt into the wine's fruit. A knockout.

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveaux Cuvee Ultra is loaded with black fruit, mint, flowers and licorice, all supported by a wall of firm, insistent tannins. The Ultra is a fascinating wine endowed with tons of complexity and implosive energy. Christophe Perrot-Minot makes the Ultra from a massale selection taken from the oldest part of the vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. It was great to meet up with Christophe Perrot-Minot, as I missed him last time around. Perrot-Minot is one of the most exciting domaines in Burgundy. Since 2006-2007 Christophe Perrot-Minot has begun to back away from the dark, concentrated wines he used to make, and the results are stunning. The fruit sees 5-7 days cold soak. Today Perrot-Minot does one punch down every two days, whereas previously he did three per day. In 2010 yields were down a whopping 45%. Over the last few years Perrot-Minot has expanded the range with a number of wines made from purchased fruit, including several that are sourced from Pierre Damoy. I tasted the Bourgogne, Gevrey and Chambolle from tank and the rest of the wines from barrel. I also tasted a number of 2009s that were fabulous. I will report on those wines in the April issue. Sweet start. Then a bit raw. Jagged palate impact. But maybe it will all settle down eventually. (JR)

(two barrels produced, vs. a normal five; from the bottom part of the vineyard, which was once part of Musigny): Good deep medium bright ruby. Blackberry, licorice pastille, violet and blood orange on the piercing, expressive nose. Dense, sweet and primary, with a powerful acid structure keeping the crushed dark berry and mineral flavors under wraps today. This very young, backward wine should be spectacular with eight or ten years of bottle age.
