2005 Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese

The wine labeled 2005 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese* or “one star” exhibits high-toned herbal essences, hints of candied red berries, and tropical fruit aromas. For all of its obvious, indeed gaudy ripeness the palate impression here is quite firm in texture. There is fat and richness underneath as well as sheer mineral extract, yet still lightness and lift as well. A sense of underlying slate is very much in evidence, but so is a measure of botrytis bitterness that very slightly dries the finish.
