The 2005 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese displays a fermentative overlay that needs to blow off, then smells of lightly cooked strawberries accented by the bitter side of vanilla. In the mouth, cooked strawberry persists along with the faint and not unattractive bitterness of vanilla and lime zest. The impressively intense finish here runs in a bitter-sweet direction, with strikingly smoky, salty mineral accents. Importer: Loosen Brothers, Portland, OR; tel. (510) 864-7255

Very like its producer – gutsy, spicy, full, very, very rich nose – amazing this is just 8% alc/vol because there is so much flavour and texture! (JR)
