The 1976 La Conseillante is a wine that I have tasted on three occasions. It offers hints of lavender and red cherry on the light and somewhat ephemeral nose however, that is deceptive because the palate is hard and austere, the fruit having ebbed away a long time ago. This was attested by two subsequent bottles, one from the château reserves and one at a blind Pomerol dinner in London, that indicate a wine that ought to have been consumed many moons ago. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

Tasted at the château, the 1976 La Conseillante is a wine that I have only tasted once before. Showing its 40 years of age with wide bricking on the rim, the nose is very light but with freshness, hints of gingerbread, clove and vestiges of red fruit. It is not as austere as the bottle shown at the vertical in 2011 and the warmth of that summer governs its softness and smoothness even after four decades. The fruit has departed a long time ago, rendering it a tactile rather than sensory wine, iron filings towards the finish deprived the substance of great vintages from this Pomerol estate. It is more interesting than a bottle that I would like to finish on my own. Tasted July 2016.
Dark and blackish with a rusty rim. Too hot and sweet and flabby with alcohol. This seemed obviously 1976. (JR)

About the producer
Château la Conseillante was built in 1750 and named after the proprietor, Libourne business woman Catherine Conseillan. The reputation of the wines quickly grew and her wines became some of the most expensive in the region.
