Not a renowned vintage generally, but Pomerol was one of the excpeptions, and this is showing beautifully right now, with the strawberry sweetness of a fully mature wine, tipping over towards being past its peak, but still ready to capture waves of tobacco, cranberry, pomegranate, campfire smoke, soft leather, soy, iodine, oyster shell, with a fresh lift on the finish.

The 1971 La Conseillante comes from a fecund Pomerol vintage. I have tasted the 1971 on three occasions and whilst it is a respectable wine for its age, I would not rank it in the top echelon with say, Petrus or Trotanoy. The nose offers decent presence, quite high-toned with hints of brown sugar and mint. The palate is sturdy with good body, if rustic, with leather, black truffle and undergrowth notes, leading to an assertive if slightly blunt and mealy finish. I suspect bottles of perfect provenance will continue to offer modest drinking pleasure and certainly more than other vintages from this decade. Tasted privately at home.
Sweet black cherry and then drying and lean. Very much drying out. Ripe black-cherry flavours, initially seductive. (JR)
Quite charming, fruity, and seductively easy to drink in 1976, the 1971 La Conseillante has now begun to fade, taking on more and more brown color and losing its fruit. It still offers a supple, round mouthful, but the prime of its life is but a fleeting memory. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 6/82.
About the producer
Château la Conseillante was built in 1750 and named after the proprietor, Libourne business woman Catherine Conseillan. The reputation of the wines quickly grew and her wines became some of the most expensive in the region.
