Score 90/100 · Drink 2016-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

The 2005 Barolo Vecchie Vigne is another powerful, deep wine. Here, too, the new French oak signatures are imposing, but there is a measure of depth in the fruit to provide balance. Dark red cherry, plum and mocha open up nicely in the glass. The 2005 is dense and authoritative, with huge tannins that give the wine its shape and drive. I would prefer to drink the 2005 sooner rather than later, before the fruit starts to fade. The Vecchie Vigne was much more compelling as a young wine.

Vibrant ruby. Broad. Spreads across the palate. Concentrated but fragrant. Very dry tarry finish. On the ‘masculine’, dry side of the spectrum. Long, but again needs to be served really quite cool… (JR)

Corino's 2005 Barolo Vecchie Vigne (from old vines in Giachini) reveals terrific balance in a rich, weighty expression of dark fruit, spices, grilled herbs and sweet French oak. Powerful and long, the wine shows remarkable energy that never lets up. The finish is long, round and exceptionally refined. This is another hugely successful Barolo from proprietor Giuliano Corino.
