Score 90/100 · Drink 2015-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2015

A dark, powerful wine, the 2004 Barolo Vecchie Vigne has plenty of textural depth, but less overall freshness than the other wines in the range. The style is explosive and textured, but the fruit has been flattened by excessive oak. Giuliano Corino's Vecchie Vigne is 100% old-vine fruit from Giachini, a site that is capable of considerable finesse, if it is sought.

A parcel within Giachini and Rocche vineyards with 56-year-old vines. Lively leaf mulch with masses of intensity and ripe tannins. Exciting stuff! (JR)

The 2004 Barolo Vecchie Vigne is made from Corino's oldest vines in the Giachini vineyard and aged in 100% new French oak. It is a sweet, explosive wine that bursts from the glass with layers of dark fruit, spices, new leather and French oak, showing notable concentration and richness. The pedigreed quality of the vintage is evident, even if the French oak seems a touch too much.
