Score 85/100 · Drink 2001-2002, Robert Parker, Aug 2001

The 1999 El Chaparral is a 100% old vine (60-100 years) Grenache cuvee. It displays a deceptively light ruby color as well as crisp, light to medium-bodied flavors reminiscent of kirsch liqueur and cherry jam. Although lighter than previous vintages, it is well-made, soft, and ideal for consuming over the next year. Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA; tel. (781) 461-5767

A bit less color at the rim than the '98. Less spicy and more minty on the nose, with a hint of green pepper. Then expansive and silky in the mouth, with lovely peppery red fruit flavors. Seems at once more filled in than the '98 and a bit more obviously alcoholic. The '98 is showing better today, but this is still unevolved.
