Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The 2011 Meursault 1er Cru les Perrières has a slightly subdued bouquet, although it is well defined. It bides its time and gently unfolds with lemon thyme and limestone scents reluctantly emerging. The palate is clean and fresh with piercing acidity – almost shrill. But it is fresh and vibrant with an engaging, almost mint-fresh finish that should develop nicely with bottle age.

(this wine and the three grand crus were still in barrel, unracked, at the beginning of June, and were scheduled to be bottled at the end of the summer): Pale yellow. Enticing aromas of pineapple, crushed stone, flowers and vanillin oak. Very pure and penetrating, with pineapple and floral flavors supported by superb saline minerality and acid cut. The density and inner-mouth tension and energy of this wine reminded me of a 2010. Finishes very long, with a light touch. This wine has shown great balance since day one, noted Gublin.

A deft touch of wood frames the cool and ultra-elegant nose of green apple, acacia blossom, pear and mineral reduction. There is superb intensity to the detailed and tension-filled middle weight flavors that seem to be extracted directly from liquid rock, all wrapped in a superbly persistent and very complex finish. This has outstanding development potential and indeed it will require at least 5 to 7 years of cellar time before it's even remotely ready to be enjoyed. A classic example. Tasted: Jun 11, 2013.
