Score 90/100 · Drink 2019-2024, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Dec 2019

Healthy bright, light yellow. Very ripe but reticent aromas of oatmeal, baking spices and spice oils. Concentrated, silky and seamless in the mouth, with plush yellow fruit flavors giving the wine a fat, sweet impression. Atypically rich and weighty for a Lafon Meursault, showing limited mineral lift and site distinction. “This has never been a great vintage for whites," said Lafon, who noted that “most of the '05s were falling apart five years ago but are better now.” Fruit-driven, large-scaled and mature but ultimately a wine with limited verve. Finishes long but a tad harsh. Not obviously oxidative but I wonder where it can go. (30 hectoliters per hectare; 3.5 g/l acidity; 3.34 pH)

Once again the Perrières is the class of these 1ers with its cool and reserved nose of white flower and green apple that complements to perfection the textured, pure and stylish flavors that possess excellent volume but also wonderful detail and punch and the intensely mineral finish that is refined, pure and long with plenty of underlying tension. A 'wow' wine.

(bottled in April; 13.8% alcohol, compared to 13% to 13.3% for the rest of the range in 2005) Explosively ripe fruit aromas of apricot and pineapple currently dominate underlying minerality on the nose. Silky, rich and powerful, with the pineapple and peach flavors framed by harmonious ripe acidity. A wine with superb stuffing and back-end breadth, finishing with palate-saturating mineral and dusty stone flavors. This boasts impressive aging potential, but the Charmes is at least as impressive in the context of the year. Just 10 barrels of this wine were produced, compared to 18 in 2004.
