The 1999 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) has reached its early maturity in grand style. I have always adored the 1999. It is once again quite special. A powerhouse in its youth, the 1999 has developed into a much more elegant wine than I had originally envisioned. Mascarello did not bottle their flagship Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio in 1999; instead, all the fruit went into the straight Monprivato bottling. This magnum is just a touch less impressive than the best bottles I have had.

The 1999 Barolo Monprivato is once again stellar. In this tasting, it is the wine's flamboyant fruit and super-expressive aromatics that jump from the glass. Sweet red cherries, pomegranate, hard candy, rose petals and mint meld together as this generous, resonant Barolo shows off its pure and total sense of majesty. Spices and a hint of blood orange develop in a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors. In 1999, Monprivato is just about as good as it gets. Mauro Mascarello did not bottle his Riserva Ca' d'Morissio in 1999; instead all the best fruit was blended into the Monprivato. Today, the 1999 is utterly thrilling. It's as simple as that. (AG)

The stunning 1999 Barolo Monprivato remains one of my favorite recent vintages of this wine, and my impression is that it will one day be regarded as one of the great Monprivatos of all time. Made in a rich, almost opulent style for this wine, the 1999 displays heady aromas of roses and sweet fruit, along with a more full-bodied profile than the 2001, with generous amounts of ripe fruit, outstanding length, exquisitely well-integrated tannins and a finish that lasts forever. As it sits in the glass, notes of minerals and tobacco gradually emerge to complete this magnificent Barolo. It is not to be missed.

The 1999 Barolo Monprivato, a vineyard to which Mauro Mascarello has dedicated his life, shows some ruby with its dark garnet. The nose is quite complex, with much mint, spice, anise, and dried roses, and the concentrated, licorice-laced flavors, mouthfilling and with a significant tannic clout, are quite plush and sensual, but long and strong as well. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2022. Importer: William Deutsch, White Plains, NY; tel. (914) 251-WINE
